Option 1, you can check train times & fares and buy tickets for any journey in Switzerland at the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) website www.sbb.ch. Be warned, the first price that www.sbb.ch shows you is usually only half the true price, because Sbb.ch assumes you have a Swiss Half Fare card as the majority of Swiss citizens do.

HiInspired by Michael Portillo's Great European Railway Journeys I am planning a 5 day trip to in late August. Hi, it sounds wonderful but will you start to feel like you are just sitting in a metal carriage looking out a window?

Luggage isn't a problem (I assume that for five days with no activities that would create dirty clothes you don't need much more than a small carry on) as there are places for it.You already realize you are doing a lot in 5 days but there's nothing wrong with that if you enjoy that sort of travel. Sometimes that suits me fine and others it doesn't - depends on my goals. If your goal is to take some gorgeous train rides and you don't mind putting them all together, then go for it!It will be tough to get reservations if you wait much longer - you are planning the trip in high group travel season so lots of seats are taken with large travel groups. I would get a reservation on each train as soon as possible. You don't need to have your pass to make a reservation so all you risk should you have to cancel is the cost of the reservation.Hope this helps. Will stay 1 extra night in and 1 extra day in. That way I can take advantage of the mountain railways if the weather is fine and the transport Museum in Lucerne. I didn't realise that you could reserve the now, I was lucky that I got 2 of the last seats on the train. Seems from the website that GEX and William Tell can only be reserved 90 days in advance. Definitely will be booking the 3 course lunch on the GEX. Just got the Hotels to book now so will be looking for 3.
